The Top 100+ Developer Tools 2022

Welcome to the Annual StackShare Awards! 🎊 (Check out last year's awards here).

This year we analyzed well over 11 million data points shared by you- the StackShare community- to bring you these rankings 📈

As usual, you probably won't get through the entire list in one sitting, so bookmark it and come on back later 📌

ICYMI: in 2022 we announced that over 1,000 Engineering Teams have adopted StackShare Enterprise to defeat tech sprawl. To get started for free, head over to the GitHub Marketplace and install the StackShare GitHub App.

And now, the moment of truth... the categories for the winners of the StackShare Top Tools Awards 2022 are:

As usual, this is our biggest undertaking of the year- we comb through a massive data set to find the best tools that you should know about, try out, or should already be using. We aggregated usage from 800K+ tech stacks , over 9M+ follows , and tons more developer comments, reviews, and votes (more on methodology below) . Let’s dive in!

New Tool of the Year (2022)

#1: Astro

While ChatGPT dominated conversations ever since it was released in November, Astro came out on top for the year. The static site ecosystem has been gaining populaity for years, so it's not too surprising to see that developers took a liking to a new solution in the space. But unlike many tools in the Jamstack, this one is actually geared towards using less JavaScript. "In Astro, you compose your website using UI components from your favorite JavaScript web framework (React, Svelte, Vue, etc). Astro renders your entire site to static HTML during the build. The result is a fully static website with all JavaScript removed from the final page." The Astro team believes that "an HTML-first, JavaScript-only-as-needed approach is the best solution for the majority of content-based websites." Astro was created by Nate Moore, Fred Schott, and Matthew Phillips in 2021 but really took off and was added to StackShare in 2022. Astro has an MIT license and has over 26K stars on GitHub. Top Community Members (2022)

These rankings are brought to you, by the entire StackShare community of over one million developers. You make these awards possible by sharing not only what you're using, but more importantly, why you chose your stack. If you aren't familiar, Stack Advice is an easy way to get and give advice on specific tech stack decisions.

So we'd like to thank and recognize the community members that chose to give their fellow developers advice in their time of need, on all sorts of important tech stack decisions.

While there are thousands of developers that help each other every year on StackShare- the 20 developers below went above and beyond the call of duty to give their peers advice over and over again.

We'd like to thank everyone who asked the community for advice and everyone who chimed in with their recommendations 🙏 See all the Stack Decisions and Stack Advice these special developers shared by checking out their stack decision feeds below!

Methodology:

For tool rankings, scores are calculated using a combination of number of stacks a tool was added to, number of votes, number of Stack Decisions shared, number of one-liners, number of follows, and number of profile views for the year. New Tool rankings were calculated from tools that were created and added to StackShare in 2022 with follows and views being weighted more heavily than other metrics since new tools don’t just enter stacks overnight.

As usual, we removed Git from the rankings in the DevOps rankings since many developers don't list it in their stack (and instead only list Git collaboration platforms).

If you have any questions about the rankings, drop us a line at team@stackshare.io!
